Foreclosure Relief To Come To Central Texas

It's a landmark settlement paid out by the nation's largest lenders for abusive practices before the housing bust.

The settlement is for 25 billion dollars nationwide.

Texas is getting 428 million dollars of that money.

Banking Giant JPMorgan Chase Reports $3.6B Gain

JPMorgan Chase on Wednesday reported sharply higher income in the recent quarter. The country's second largest bank says it made $3.6 billion, up from about a half-billion dollars at this time last year.

The gains came mostly from trading and investment banking activity, which outweighed continuing losses in the bank's credit card and other consumer lending businesses.



 

Calif. Lawmakers To Reduce Prison Population

Lawmakers in California begin overhauling some of the state's prison policies this week. They have to figure out how to cut $1.2 billion dollars from the corrections budget.

They also have to figure out how to comply with a federal court order requiring California to cut its prison population by about 25 percent.



 

Postal Service Faces Gloom Of Economy

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday it lost more than $2 billion between April and June. It's on track to be $7 billion dollars in debt by the end of September.

Members of Congress are considering major cuts — including closing hundreds of post offices, and even scaling back delivery from six days a week to five.



 

Economic Crisis Hurts Health In Developing Countries

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon announces Monday a $20 billion initiative to support women and children in developing countries whose health has been jeopardized by the global economic crisis.

War Funding Bill Stuck In House-Senate Talks

The Pentagon says it urgently needs nearly $100 billion dollars to carry on with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But a bill to provide the money has run into trouble in Congress. The dispute is centered on the treatment of detainees who were captured years ago.
