A couple of weeks ago, the Statesman reported that Austin's urban core lost a lot of children between 2000 and 2010.

  

The Austin Independent School District’s Facility Master Plan Task Force has recommended closing Barton Hills, Brooke, Joslin, Oak Springs, Ortega, Pease, Sanchez and Zilker elementary schools and Pearce Middle School.

While working on a piece for Newgeography, I generated a couple of Census maps depicting the percentage of various central Austin block groups populated by households with children.

 I was particularly curious about the change in the composition of central Austin households between 1990 and 2000.
