I took the train from Fort Worth to Austin on Monday. It wasn't close to being on time (three hours behind schedule), but my attitude was: "Why would it be?" Amtrak is underfunded, underappreciated, underused and yet still under the constant stress of operating a national rail network.

I am not a player. I work hard for my money, and I can't stand to lose it. I don't even enjoy poker, because to play you need a certain attitude, so you can say, "Hey, I lost $200 but it was a fun evening, so it was worth it." When I lose, I say to myself, "Schmuck.

You lost."
