In a just-released, scathing editorial, the Austin American-Statesman's award-winning writer and editor Alberta Phillips hit the nail on the head:  Austin's animal shelter is a "euthanasia machine" whose management is not genuinely interested in increasing the number of animals that leave the shelter alive through adoptions and transfers to rescue groups.

Council's Split Decision: Good for Homeless Pets, Bad for Democracy

On Thursday, October 11th, the citizens of Austin were out in full force attempting to convince our City Council to do the right thing--- to rebuild our animal shelter on the shores of Town Lake (now Lady Bird Lake).  Regrettably, the Council made the wrong decision; they decided, by a 6-1 vote, to relocate Austin's animal shelter to a difficult-to-find, out-of-sight, out-of-mind site near the intersection of Airport Boulevard and East 7th Street.
