AISD has announced that it is putting it's 5-building 128,000 square foot downtown headquarters on the market for $32M.

The building could easily be converted to commercial and retail use.

The headquarters building has long created a void on sixth street where its retail-less ground floor occupies a critical block just west of Lamar.

The building goes through the block to fifth street.

After layoffs and the threat of school closures, AISD is looking to shore up the precarious 2012-2013 budget.

Along with many other money-saving measures, the Trustees have been discussing raising property taxes 9 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

As the city reels from Monday's announcement by AISD that they would be eliminating nearly 500 jobs, the Austin Neighborhood Council met Wednesday night to discuss the potential school closures.

Last night the Austin School Board met to muddle over how best to deal with a troubled budget.

Suggested cuts have included the possible closing of schools and laying-off about 536 staff.

Nearly 400 Austin students, representing 12 high school marching bands and the Austin All-Star Band, will perform at the 38th Annual AISD Marching Band Jamboree on Tuesday, September 21, at 7 p.m., at the Toney Burger Stadium, located at 3200 Jones Road.

The Austin School District invites the community to an afternoon of island music at the first-ever AISD Steelband Festival on Sunday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m., at the Toney Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road.

Austin parents of students who will be in kindergarten and first grade next fall (the 2010-2011 school year) — and their children — are invited to attend a Dual Language orientation session at one of the four AISD schools that will offer the new program.

The sessions will include tours of the campuses.

Stephen F. Austin High School presents Seussical Featuring the Art, Band, Choral, Dance, Orchestra, and Theatre students of AISD, July 9-11.

The show is centered on the works of Dr. Seuss, and carries on his theme of anything is possible. Director of Fine Arts for AISD, Greg Goodman, hopes to develop the AISD summer musical project as an annual event for the Austin community.
