The Post MLK Generation

For a whole generation of us, Martin Luther King Jr. has always been dead. He was already an icon and a martyr before I was old enough to notice there were people of different skin tones.

He was, for most of my youth, a great speech and a mighty symbol. He wasn’t a real man in the same way Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are not real men.

They are vehicles for our national narratives.



 

Uncovered Photos Offer View of Lincoln Ceremony

They had been housed at the library for years, hidden by an error in labeling. The photos show the crowd that gathered for the speech.
