Well, folks, I just can't miss the irony in the events leading up to my stumbling across your forum. The article re: Howard's Nursery and its present condition has resonated as loud as the humm of locust this year.
Yesterday I flew, via Google Earth, to the Austin area to visit my mother's childhood home and see if Howard's Nursery
still shared it's property with the Haile Airport hanger that my granddad "Doc" Haile had once owned. They lived at 200 west 40th until around 1940. I flew in to see if the house that she spoke of in her best memories of him, was still there. As some of you have probably experienced, the goosebumps and the thrill of visiting a place today where the ghost of history used to play is beyond full description. That it's made possible while sitting in front of a cold, technologically superior thing is especially significant. I never flew with my Granddad, but ironically, technology allows me to appreciate the view from above as well as on the ground. Even though the flight is not real, the goosebumps and the lump in my throat, most definitely is. This morning, my daughter came upon the poll, now ended, regarding Haile Airport designation as a Historical site and quickly emailed family members not realizing the poll was over. Perhaps the internet is the ghostly ether that some dismissed 'as not real." I tell my kids on overcast days to keep looking for the signs that only lately are gaining in definition. I can tell them stories like the one my mother told me, about Austin, about the house where she remembered her dad, my granddad, recuperating from a crash that nearly killed him and his student passenger.
An event more symbolic for me today than it was for her yesterday. I'm certain of this. The story symbolized the type of heroism that is necessary today. Decisions have to be made that will decide the fate of ideas in spite of the suicide mission that some passengers want to take us on.
Visiting the old Haile Airport today I see a metaphor that just won't go away. If another poll was begun, I'm certain the response would be much different especially if "Doc" Haile's family had a say. Although we're late getting the news, we're not dead yet. Let's please not allow the vandals of today to gain any more power over our yesterdays.
You can email me personally at lkhilts [at] naturalperceptions [dot] net or post here at the forum and I'll check in daily. I'll attempt to upload a picture of Erin Haile in the field that once enclosed Haile Airport. lisa h
I'm dumbfounded that no one bothered to contact anyone related to Haile Airport...even by name. I am extremely interested in knowing weather or not there is anything left to be done ie..politically, historicaly or financially(is it for sale) informatin seems sketchy...need to know status of situation or contacts. Eager to know
White male, 45 yo +, 5'8, 170, brown hair, moustache, glasses, square face. Last seen wearing white shirt, blue jeans, dark shoes and belt, carrying a clear backpack.
Caught this guy peeking in my neighbor's windows about a month ago. Then found him Friday night walking around Woodrow and ducking into apartment courtyards after dark. I think he has been testing door knobs looking for open doors.
He matches the description of a registered sex offender who is recently off probation. PLEASE keep your eyes out.
