December's Jobless Rate Holds Steady

The Labor Department reports that employers shed 85,000 jobs last month even as the unemployment rate held steady at 10 percent.

The figures indicate more people have given up looking for work. Once people stop looking for jobs, they are no longer counted among the unemployed.
