The polls are open throughout Afghanistan and there are reports of sporadic violence. Election officials say voter turnout was low in the opening hours of polling, but they hope it picks up later in the day.
Much of that has to do with whether voters feel safe enough to head to their polling stations to cast their vote in the presidential election.
